Unless you're younger than 16 years old, you have no excuse to not own a grown-up handbag or tote. You're a talented, hard-working woman who deserves to carry her lipstick and cellphone in a high-quality sidekick.
"You're crazy. The handbag I wish I had is way too expensive."
I understand that the Kate Spade cross-body you've had your eye on for two seasons could easily break your bank account. Do some research! You're not going to find the best deal in a Louis Vuitton display window. I recently purchased a Michael Kors handbag from an online boutique store for $80. There are plenty of other online options for great deals, including Steve Madden's select items on 6pm.com
"There's nothing wrong with my Wal-Mart clutch."
First of all, you're wrong. I hate to burst your bubble but a mass-supply store's off brands are super low-quality and will fall apart after you tote one around for a month or two. Second of all, I'm really not trying to offend anyone when it comes to financial resources. I'm a college student. I can't afford the $1,890 off-white leather and bamboo Gucci bag either. All I'm asking is that you invest at least $50 in a purse that will last you at least a year.
"I don't care how my handbag looks. No one is paying attention to it anyway."
No….no no no. You carry around your purse in plain daylight! You're constantly grabbing things from it and slinging it over your shoulder, etc., which only draws more attention to it. People look at your purse just as much as they look at your outfit, shoes, or even your face! A saggy rainbow zebra tote from Justice isn't cute under ANY circumstances, unless you're 7. And trust me, you'd rather not know the reason everyone is staring at that one.
Employers also pay attention to your bag. That CEO won't take a second glance if you're dragging a fringed, feathered, bedazzled nightmare behind you. Also, consider using this bag outside of the office. Maybe you're going on dates. Maybe you're going to parties. Think of what's at stake: your career, your love life, and most importantly - your dignity.
"I don't carry a purse. I'm not girly."
If you're not girly, I'll just assume you're reading a fashion blog in order to learn about style and fashion. Handbags don't have to be "girly". Handbags can (and should be) sophisticated. Many have a minimalistic and occasional masculine vibe, like a lot of the Fossil styles.
In the end, this is a bag that should make you feel confident and grown up. You should be proud of this bag and be able to wear it with a number of outfits - or maybe everything in your closet. This purchase - like other purchases I'll recommend in the future under the "You need one of these" column - is an investment. Take this into consideration and get shopping.
