There's going to be a quick detour from style this week. I've decided to add a "Beauty" section to my blog and share some of my favorite products and tips that are tailored to your skin. This week: lips.
Lip color, like any other makeup product, should be an investment. There are many things you should take into consideration before purchasing, and I'm going to briefly cover them here.
"I have dry lips." The most important thing to remember is to moisturize. Lip balm - or even the classic Chapstick - should be a daily application. My favorite lip balm is an untinted formula of Baby Lips by Maybelline. My lips get super dry in the winter, and my favorite product this time of year is Yves Saint Laurent lipstick. Cream-based lipsticks or filling lip pencils (NOT LIP LINER) are going to be your best bet to keep moisture in and avoid cracked lips. Lip stains are mostly alcohol-based, and are guaranteed to dry out your lips. Lip glosses are an okay choice, but only apply if you plan to be inside all day. Long hair will blow around in the winter wind and stick to lips. The cold air will also have a gooping-effect on the lipgloss, making it look sloppy and feel chunky.
"I don't want to have to reapply my lip color all day." There has yet to be an invincible color that stays on all day without wear or smudging that you can buy over the counter. Lip stains are going to be your best bet for long-wear. When wearing a lip stain, prep your lips with a lip balm and let dry for 2-4 minutes before applying lip stain. This will help prevent your lips from drying out too much. Make sure you know which lip stain you're buying too. Some go on glossy and dry in a matte look. Some go on shiny and dry with a shimmer. If you purchase from a makeup distributor like Ulta or Sephora, ask one of the people working which one would work best for what your preferences are. One of my favorite long-wear lipsticks is Kat Von D. I only have to reapply after a cup of coffee or a full meal. The colors are really vibrant and there's a ton to choose from.
"I don't want to spend $35 on lipstick." In a perfect world, makeup would be free. Unfortunately, we're paying for what we're getting. Lipsticks are pretty true to price in the fact that the more expensive they are, the better quality they're going to be. Below, I have some of my personal favorite brands in shades to go with your skin tone. My favorite brands include Yves Saint Laurent, Kat Von D, Nars, and Sephora. Good news, though! If you don't want to splurge on lipstick, the next best thing is Maybelline lipstick. I love the creamy base, and they offer more colors than you could imagine. You can purchase Maybelline online at their website, or from a local WalMart, Target, etc.
Time to check out which shades are perfect for you!
