How do you wear a colorful suit without looking like Hillary Clinton? Solange is here to help.
Beyonce may be Queen B, but her sister, Solange Knowles, is the queen of the cute suit. In the past few years, she's become notorious for her impeccable street style and creative outfit styling. Not everyone call pull off the colorful suit - for work, or just in general - but if you're going to try, this is where you start.

how to dress like solange:
1. Style simply. You want your suit to be the main attraction. Statement necklaces and over-the-top hairstyles are not going to be your friend with this type of ensemble, because they'll draw attention away from the suit. Try simple jewelry. Silver compliments cool colors, gold compliments warm colors (while both compliment black and white.) If your suit is bright, pair it with a neutral top and shoe. 2. Don't forget about trends The quickest way to update any traditional outfit is to pair it with a trend. Loafers are in right now, and this cute pair from Zara is comfy, functional, and easy on your wallet! Not into loafers? That's okay too. Pick any of the seasons hottest trends: platforms, fringe, lace-up flats, a trench coat, cut-outs, culottes, mules, or leather (just not all at once, please!) 3. Play with prints Solids are safe, but prints can be really fun. Bold and daring? Try a full print suit, like the one Solange is wearing in the third photo at the top of the page. If crazy prints aren't your style (or appropriate for your age), then go halfway with a printed blazer or jacquard pant. Here, I paired a cropped, floral blazer with a trendy culotte. Florals are always in, so don't be afraid to invest in a floral that you really like. If it's a different pattern, be a little more conservative. I also added a polish that I'm totally crushing on right now -- the matte coat from Butter London. It's different, but not distracting or junior-y. 4. Commit to the suit. You should really commit to any outfit you wear, but the suit ranks highest. Will a white blazer look alright with a dark wash jean? Sure. Over a shift dress? Probably. But you don't want to look "alright," you want to look your best. You want to stand out. Go all out with a blank canvas paired with glamorous accessories. White is clean, sophisticated, and youthful. And feel free to wear it after labor day. That rule hasn't applied since the second season of What Not to Wear on TLC. |
